Hiloʻs Imiloa Astronomy Center at the University of Hawaiʻi hosted a full day celebration of Makahiki Games. Traditionally, Hawaiʻians would, at the time of harvest in October and through the first few months of the new year, celebrate Makahiki: a time of thanksgiving, peace and unity. The games were many and challenged all participants in strength, wisdom, endurance and understanding land management. Some games and activities that attracted young and old alike at this contemporary gathering included tug of war, sled riding, javelin throwing, wrestling, poi pounding, hawaiʻian bowling, etc.
